Peckoltia lujani is never going to win a beauty contest for plecos. On the other hand, this is an affordable and very easy to keep alternative, as well as a great algae eater. Its modest size also makes it a good alternative for smaller aquariums. Its a common export from Colombia, and a well-established species in the hobby.
Facts:
Name: Peckoltia lujani (Armbruster, Werneke & Tan, 2015)
Trade names: L127
Origin: Orinoco, Colombia and Venezuela
Maximum size: 12 cm / 5”
P.lujani was considered by many to belong to a new genus before it was described as a Peckoltia in 2015. There are several traits which suggest this is not the right genus for this species, and I aggree with those who think it fits better in the genus Ancistomus. As with other representatives of Ancistomus, males of this species have a more contrast rich colouration and stronger odontodal growth on the pectoral fin rays and below the eyes. Breeding is rarely reported (possibly due to lack of trying?), but when it does occur it happens in typical manner: Eggs are laid in a tight cave and guarded by the male. L127 is mostly herbivore, but should be fed a varied diet which is not too protein-heavy. Clean, warm water is essential for their well being.
