L443 is a representative of the so called “Bulldog Plecos”, a strange name for this group of Plecos. L443 is also referred to as Chaetostoma dorsale, but there is some debate if it’s indeed this species. More importantly, L443 is a nice-looking fish suitable for smaller aquariums and can be recognized by its white dots and stripes on a grey background. It’s also a good algae-eater.

This species is typically mixed with other Chaetostoma species from Colombian exporters. L443 is found in fast flowing rivers near Villavicencio in Colombia and needs a high level of oxygen to thrive. Unlike many other species of Chaetostoma which need cooler water (typically those from higher levels near the Andes), this species requires a water temperature of 23-28 C. Males develop bigger and broader heads, and eggs are laid among boulders or even on the glass, although somewhat hidden from view. Males become slightly territorial towards each-other.
