From Rio Jari, a northern affluent to the Amazon in northeastern Brazil, comes a very interesting species of Ancistrus which we call L327. This is a small-grown type of Ancistrus, even suitable for smaller aquariums. It’s a clear-water species, which makes breeding easier than what’s the case with more famous black and white Ancistrus types like L107 and L183. Unfortunately, exports of L327 are very rare, as there is not much collecting for ornamental fish in the Rio Jari at the moment. We can only hope this fish will be established in the hobby through breeding in captivity.

Facts:

Name: Ancistrus sp.

Trade names: Eggspot Bristlenose, L327

Origin: Rio Jari, Brazil

Maximum TL: 9 cm / 3,5”

L327 is one of three black with white spots Ancistrus types known from the Rio Jari. The other two, L325 and L344, both have much smaller and denser spots. L327 breeds in typical Ancistrus manner, with the male guarding a small clutch in a suitable cave. Males grow the typical bristles on the head. With it’s small adult size, L327 is suitable for aquariums of smaller size, but good water quality and warmth are important factors for it’s well-being.
